The Castle Church Wittenberg – The Heart of the Reformation
For visitors to Lutherstadt Wittenberg, the Castle Church is a must-see. It is not only an architectural landmark but also of central importance to the history of the Reformation.
History and Significance
The Castle Church was built between 1489 and 1509 by Elector Frederick the Wise. Martin Luther is said to have nailed his 95 Theses against indulgences to the main portal on October 31, 1517, which is considered the beginning of the Reformation. Whether the posting of the Theses actually happened this way is not historically certain, but the church portal remains inextricably linked with Luther and the Reformation.
The church is the final resting place of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon. On the tower of the Castle Church is a motto with the words: "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God."
What Awaits Visitors?
Visitors can view the bronze Theses Door, which commemorates Luther's posting of the Theses. Inside the church are the graves of Luther and Melanchthon. The Castle Church is part of the UNESCO World Heritage and is an important part of the Luther memorials in Wittenberg.
