The Cranach Courtyards in Wittenberg – Tracing a Renaissance Artist
A visit to the Cranach Courtyards is a journey back to the time of the Reformation and Renaissance. The courtyards were the workplace of painter Lucas Cranach the Elder, one of the most versatile artists and important citizens of Wittenberg.
History and Significance
Lucas Cranach the Elder was summoned to Wittenberg by Elector Frederick the Wise in 1505. Initially, Cranach lived in the painting room in the castle, but in 1512 he acquired the properties at Markt 3 and 4. From 1518, he lived with his family in a large estate at Schlossstraße 1, where he maintained his painting workshop and operated a pharmacy. Cranach was not only a gifted artist but also a pharmacist, innkeeper, and mayor.
In his workshops, he trained the next generation of artists for the European princely courts. Cranach's son, Lucas Cranach the Younger, later took over the courtyard.
