Wittenberg Marketplace
Wittenberger Marktplatz – Historisches Herz der Reformation
The market square in Wittenberg is the historical heart of the city and a significant site of the Reformation. Surrounded by magnificent townhouses, the old town hall, and the St. Mary's Church, it exudes the charm of past centuries. This is where Martin Luther worked, preached, and where the Reformation movement took shape. Two impressive monuments commemorate him and his fellow reformer Philipp Melanchthon.
The square was once the setting for important public events and markets. Today, it invites people to linger with its cafes, restaurants, and events. Visitors experience history at every turn – whether admiring the late Gothic architecture or strolling through the historical ensemble. The market square is especially atmospheric in the evening hours or during city festivals.
As part of the UNESCO World Heritage, it is a must-see for any visit to Wittenberg.
