Piesteritz Factory Settlement
The Piesteritz Factory Estate – An Architectural Monument of Modernism
The Piesteritz company housing estate is an exceptional example of early 20th-century reform architecture and is considered Germany's largest car-free residential estate. Built between 1916 and 1919 as a workers' settlement for the adjacent nitrogen factory, it offered approximately 2,000 employees and their families modern living space with high comfort: all 363 terraced and single-family houses already had a bathroom, indoor toilet, and a private garden back then.
The estate is characterized by its yellow facades, well-maintained front gardens, and many green spaces – an ideal place for a relaxing walk away from the classic Reformation sites. The centerpiece, the Piesteritz Courtyard, now serves as an event location. The estate was faithfully restored for the Expo 2000 and is under monument protection.
